2023 Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept

Daihatsu has unveiled its concept lineup for the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo, with the Vision Copen taking the spotlight. Departing from the typical kei car category, this concept embraces the identity of a “compact sports convertible” while retaining the DNA of the smaller Copen.

Appearing as a modernized and robust version of the first-generation Copen from 2002, the prototype showcases rounded lighting units on both ends and shares similarities in body surfacing. The Vision Copen's dimensions, slightly smaller than a Mazda MX-5 ND, measure 3,835 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,265 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,415 mm. This represents a significant increase in length compared to the current second-generation Copen in Japan, contributing to its more mature proportions.

The cabin features a straightforward and driver-focused design, boasting a restrained digital cockpit, touch-sensitive controls on the center console, and sporty seats. Both the exterior and interior convey a production-ready appearance, fueling speculation that Daihatsu may be eyeing entry into the compact sports car segment.

The presence of a 1.3-liter engine under the hood adds weight to this speculation. While specific details are undisclosed, Daihatsu mentioned its ability to operate on carbon-neutral fuel. The interior rendering hints at a pairing with an automatic gearbox, suggesting a significant increase in power output compared to the production Copen kei car's 658 cc motor.
