The 2024 Volkswagen ID. Code is an innovative concept car unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, showcasing Volkswagen's future direction in both design and technology, tailored specifically for the Chinese market. The ID. Code is a preview of an upcoming electric SUV, designed to demonstrate the brand's technological advancements and new design principles, even though it will not be mass-produced.
As a conceptual crossover with a coupe-like silhouette, the ID. Code features sleek, futuristic design elements. Its exterior includes cameras instead of traditional side mirrors and touch panels replacing door handles, as well as a striking black glass roof and 24-inch wheels. The front of the vehicle is dominated by dynamic, integrated lighting that changes color based on driving mode and road conditions, signaling a shift toward advanced, AI-assisted lighting systems. The solid taillight and glowing red VW logo further emphasize the futuristic aesthetics.
A standout feature of the ID. Code is its "smart" side windows, which display a variety of information, including weather, battery status, and even a virtual voice assistant with a “face.” The front cabin has an expansive screen that spans the entire width of the dashboard, and an additional vertical tablet is mounted just below it. The vehicle is designed for Level 4 autonomous driving, allowing the steering wheel to be removed, and enabling the front seats to rotate 180 degrees to face the rear passengers for a more communal, lounge-like experience.
In terms of interior features, Volkswagen has focused on health and cleanliness, with features such as UV lamps for disinfection, antibacterial filters for the air, and a robot vacuum cleaner to maintain the cabin’s cleanliness. The rear swing doors add to the vehicle's unique design, offering easy access and a distinctive flair.
Volkswagen has also outlined its ambitious "in China, for China" strategy, aiming to launch 30 new models by 2030, which will include both electric and hybrid vehicles. The ID. Code represents the first step in a new era of mobility for the brand, combining all-electric vehicles with a lifestyle-oriented design through the new ID.UX sub-brand. The ID.UX is focused on appealing to younger customers with progressive design and innovative interfaces, with the ID.UNYX being the first model slated for release in 2024.
The ID. Code and its technology showcase Volkswagen’s commitment to localization and innovation, partnering with Chinese companies like XPENG and Horizon Robotics to develop autonomous systems, infotainment, and connectivity. The ID. Code represents not only Volkswagen's future in China but also its broader strategy to become a leader in the global electric mobility era, blending futuristic technology, design, and user experience in one compelling concept.
