The 2003 Nissan Effis Concept is a forward-thinking city commuter vehicle that highlights Nissan's exploration of fuel cell technology and lightweight design. It was unveiled at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show and is characterized by its compact size, measuring only three meters in length, which enhances agility for urban driving.

One of the standout features of the Effis is its innovative Super Motor, a compact, high-efficiency electric motor that operates with two independently controlled output shafts. This allows for precise distribution of power to the front and rear wheels, enhancing both dynamic performance and stability. Each axle has its own Super Motor, enabling exceptional maneuverability, which is particularly beneficial in city environments.

The Effis is powered by a Compact Lithium-ion Battery, known for its thin and space-saving design, which contributes to the vehicle's lightweight construction. By placing key components like the fuel cell stack, inverter, and battery under the floor, the Effis maximizes interior space while optimizing weight distribution. This strategic placement also accommodates a hydrogen tank under the rear seat, allowing for a well-balanced design.

Nissan has incorporated a "3.5 seater concept" into the Effis, providing flexible seating arrangements. It comfortably seats three occupants and can accommodate a fourth, albeit smaller, passenger. The innovative design of the instrument panel allows it to rotate and transform into a table when needed, showcasing multifunctionality akin to the Japanese "furoshiki" wrapping cloth. This adaptability not only enhances the car's practicality but also its usability in various configurations, whether for additional passengers or cargo.

The body of the Effis utilizes lightweight materials like plastic and aluminum, ensuring that the vehicle remains nimble while addressing the weight constraints typical of city cars. The left-side doors hinge in a manner that allows easier access to the rear seat, further emphasizing the concept's focus on urban usability.

Overall, the Nissan Effis Concept embodies the future of city transportation, merging advanced fuel cell technology with innovative design principles aimed at making urban commuting more efficient, comfortable, and versatile.
