The 2006 Honda GRX Concept was a lightweight compact sports car displayed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Developed by Honda R&D Americas (HRA) in California, the GRX combined ideas from Honda's motorcycle and automotive engineering programs.
The GRX used an unusual 1.5-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine originally developed for motorcycle applications. Honda installed the compact flat-six in an ultra-light sports car intended to combine performance, efficiency and responsive handling. The concept was never planned for regular production.
Its design featured a low aerodynamic body, a large windshield and scissor-style doors. The compact cabin was influenced by Formula racing cars, while lightweight materials such as aluminum and composites helped keep overall weight down. The GRX was designed around a simple sports-car philosophy with a low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution.

The GRX also had an interesting connection to Honda's earlier experimental cars. Its basic design originated with concepts developed during the 1990s and was closely related to the Honda J-VX, which appeared at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show. The J-VX explored a different powertrain, combining a small gasoline engine with Honda's early Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology.
Ideas tested with these concepts later appeared in Honda's production hybrids, particularly the first-generation Honda Insight. The GRX itself did not reach production, but its compact proportions and sporty hybrid-era thinking also anticipated some of the ideas Honda later used for the CR-Z.
The Honda GRX is therefore more than an unusual 2006 show car. It was part of Honda's long-running work on lightweight, efficient vehicles, combining a compact sports-car body with unconventional engineering and ideas developed through both Honda's motorcycle and automobile programs.
