The 2006 Ford Reflex Concept was built to prove that a small car did not have to look cheap, soft, or boring. Shown at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, it was Ford’s answer to the idea that compact cars were becoming more important in America, but still needed attitude, technology, and a clear identity.
The Reflex used a diesel-electric hybrid layout aimed at high fuel economy. Ford claimed up to 65 mpg, or roughly 3.6 L/100 km. The system combined a small diesel engine driving the front axle with an electric motor at the rear, giving the car all-wheel-drive capability without a conventional mechanical AWD system. Energy was stored in a lithium-ion battery pack, which was still advanced for a concept car in 2006.
The body was compact, but it did not look timid. It had a low, aggressive stance, sharp surfacing, polished 20-inch alloy wheels, and narrow low-rolling-resistance Michelin tires designed to help efficiency. Solar panels were also built into the car to help support the electrical system, reinforcing the Reflex as more than just a styling exercise.
Inside, Ford used a 2+1 rear-seat layout instead of a normal full bench. The cabin mixed red and white trim, transparent mesh seat covers, and synthetic or regenerated materials. The seats were designed for airflow as much as style, and the overall interior felt more like a tech product than a traditional economy car.
The Reflex also previewed safety and convenience ideas that would later become more common. It had keyless activation, LED-lit instrumentation, a BeltMinder system for rear passengers, and inflatable rear safety belts. That last feature was especially notable because Ford later brought inflatable rear seat belts to production vehicles.
The Reflex never became a production car, but it captured a real moment in Ford’s thinking. It showed the company exploring small-car efficiency, diesel-hybrid technology, electric rear-axle assist, solar charging, sustainable interior materials, and advanced safety equipment all in one compact concept. It was not a cheap commuter car. It was Ford trying to make efficiency feel bold.
