2000 Volkswagen Dune Concept

The 2000 Volkswagen Dune Concept, unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, was designed as a captivating off-road iteration of the New Beetle, often referred to as the "Mud Buggy." This concept aimed to blend the comfort of a sedan with the off-road versatility of a dune buggy. It featured a potent V5 engine, four-wheel drive utilizing the "4 Motion" system from the latest Golf model, and specific design elements to enhance its off-road capabilities.

In terms of power, the Dune Concept boasted a high-torque V5 engine, providing ample power for off-road adventures. The drivetrain featured four-wheel drive using the "4 Motion" system, ensuring optimal traction on various terrains. The six-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, paired with special 235/60 R18 tires, were designed to increase the vehicle's height for improved off-road capabilities.

The Dune Concept's suspension system was equipped with variable-height air suspension, offering three settings to accommodate different terrains. This allowed the driver to adjust the ground clearance, with a maximum clearance of 120mm.

Externally, the concept's design elements were tailored to convey its ability to handle rough off-road conditions. Polished aluminum was incorporated for the front and rear bumpers and running boards. The rear bumper featured twin exhaust ports, and the transparent, detachable center section of the roof could be neatly stowed in the trunk.

Inside, the Dune Concept showcased a distinctive interior with a combination of black, yellow, and aluminum elements. Notably, there was no carpet, only rubber matting, emphasizing its rugged and practical design. Safety features included a rollover warning dial.

Volkswagen of America clarified that the Dune Concept was initially presented as a concept with no confirmed plans for production. While it served as an attention-grabbing showcase at the auto show, Volkswagen hinted at the possibility of exploring production if there was significant interest based on customer feedback.
