2000 Ford Prodigy Concept

The 2000 Ford Prodigy Concept emerged as a groundbreaking experiment in efficiency and hybrid propulsion. Designed to serve as a test bed for innovative technologies applicable to everyday cars, the Prodigy showcased Ford's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.

Under the hood, the Prodigy featured a 1.2-liter DIATA diesel engine paired with an electric motor, integrating petrol and electrical components for enhanced fuel efficiency. While resembling the Audi A8 in appearance, the Prodigy's distinctive features set it apart, including a full-fledged trunk and remarkable aerodynamics with a Cx coefficient of only 0.166.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Prodigy achieved 80 miles per gallon of diesel fuel, making it a notable contender in the hybrid car market. The aluminum body contributed to a 30% reduction in weight compared to standard Ford Taurus sedans of similar dimensions.

One of the Prodigy's innovative design elements was the removal of exterior mirrors, replaced by a cabin-installed monitor connected to external spot video cameras. This decision aimed to achieve a significantly low coefficient of drag, showcasing the emphasis on aerodynamics.

The hybrid car's electrical system, named DIATA (Direct Injection, Aluminum Through Bolt Assembly), integrated a generator with a starter and featured a manual transmission without a clutch pedal. The Prodigy's ground clearance could be adjusted on the go, supported by special screens under the car to maintain aerodynamics and stability.

Neil Ressler, Vice President of Ford Technology and Chief Technology Officer for hybrid projects, highlighted the Prodigy's role in Ford's journey toward a fuel-efficient family car. Positioned as an interim step between the P2000 R&D programs and future production hybrids, the Prodigy aimed to pave the way for affordable and efficient hybrid vehicles.

With its lightweight platform, compact electrical installation, and forward-thinking design, the 2000 Ford Prodigy Concept left an indelible mark on the automotive landscape, embodying Ford's vision for the future of family cars at the turn of the century.
