2000 Fiat Ecobasic Concept

The 2000 Fiat Ecobasic Concept, designed by Roberto Giolito, embodies Fiat's response to an environmentally conscious society. As a precursor to the Panda replacement, this concept focuses on creating a low-cost, functional, and eco-friendly small car.

Constructed with a basic steel structure, the Ecobasic minimizes weight by utilizing recyclable plastics for all body panels, including anti-scratch polycarbonates for rear windows. The external design prioritizes functionality, achieving an exceptional drag coefficient of 0.28. The front end features a plastic unit designed to absorb minor impacts, housing an openable flap for easy fluid checks.

Internally, the Ecobasic emphasizes exposed tubular structures for the dashboard and seats. The controls are minimal, incorporating a 'Selespeed' type sequential gearbox with no clutch requirement. The air conditioning system is controlled by a single multi-function item, accompanied by a large centrally mounted circular speedometer.

Mechanically, the Ecobasic employs a four-cylinder 1.2-liter diesel engine with 'Multijet' common-rail injection. Generating 61bhp and 160Nm torque, it achieves fuel consumption under 3l/100km, accelerating to 100km/h in 13.3 seconds. The transmission includes a 'Selespeed' type sequential, clutchless shift with normal and economy modes.

The recipe for environmental friendliness involves a lightweight aerodynamic body (750 kg, Cx = 0.28), a “robot” gearbox, and a diesel engine with a consumption of 3 liters per 100 km. Despite its innovative features and positive reviews, Fiat opted not to bring the Ecobasic to market, hesitating to deviate from current models. The concept showcased revolutionary solutions, such as recycled plastic panels and a modular design for cost-effective production. The car's efficient performance and low fuel consumption earned commendation during testing and European auto shows. However, Fiat's decision meant the Ecobasic remained a notable concept rather than a production reality.
