An A-Z guide to 149 concept vehicles, prototypes, manufacturer show builds and updated design studies from 2023.
Concept-car design in 2023 went well beyond the electric supercars that made the headlines. Automakers also unveiled tiny city vehicles, hydrogen-powered racing projects, practical delivery vans and off-road prototypes. The Shanghai auto show, CES, major European premieres and Japan Mobility Show supplied much of the year's new work. Smaller firms and manufacturer design centers added several of the more unusual ideas.
Each heading follows the same format: year, manufacturer, model and Concept. Entries describe what the vehicle was built to test or preview, with measurable details where manufacturers released them. They distinguish prototypes from production specifications, and every entry includes a clickable source. Factory one-offs and revised versions of earlier concepts appear in their own sections so they are not mistaken for entirely new designs.

New concepts, prototypes and design studies
New designs and experimental vehicles first introduced in 2023. These include sports cars, EVs, urban runabouts and early engineering prototypes, arranged alphabetically by manufacturer.
2023 AEHRA Sedan Concept
Italian startup AEHRA revealed its second electric vehicle in June as a low, long-wheelbase sedan designed around a dedicated skateboard chassis. The sweeping roofline, short overhangs and unusually large cabin were possible because no combustion engine or transmission tunnel was required. AEHRA discussed lightweight composite body construction and a bespoke battery partnership with Miba, but had not demonstrated production-ready performance or range figures. The exterior was intended to complement its earlier SUV design.

2023 AIM EV Micro 01 Concept
AIM developed this tiny battery-electric two-seater as a practical answer to short trips in Okinawa and other island communities. It measures about 2.5 meters long and 1.3 meters wide, with a claimed range of roughly 120 kilometers per charge. The design accommodates open or enclosed bodies and either fixed or removable batteries. Former Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura's studio shaped its compact exterior. It is a real urban-mobility proposal, not a downsized sports-car exercise.

2023 AIM EV Sport 01 Concept
The EV Sport 01 is a compact electric coupe developed by Japanese engineering firm AIM with design input from Shiro Nakamura. Its long hood, rounded body and short rear deck deliberately reference 1960s sports cars. Two electric motors drive the rear wheels, allowing torque-vectoring control rather than relying on an ordinary mechanical differential. AIM built a running example for Goodwood in 2023, giving the project a stronger engineering basis than a static styling model.

2023 Alpine A290 Beta Concept
Alpine's A290 Beta previews the electric hot hatch that would extend the brand beyond the A110 sports car. Based on Renault's small-electric-car architecture, it wears enlarged wheel arches, a broad track and a short, aggressive body. The show car used a central driving position with two rear passenger seats, a layout chosen to emphasize driving rather than production practicality. Its chassis brief concentrated on steering response, controllable grip and lightweight feel.

2023 Alpine A424 Beta Concept
The A424 Beta previewed Alpine's next top-level endurance-racing machine for the World Endurance Championship. The low prototype combined an LMDh-class chassis concept with a turbocharged V6 powertrain and standardized hybrid hardware. Its long fin, enclosed wheels and large rear wing were shaped by racing regulations and aerodynamic needs rather than road-car styling. The car was revealed in 2023 as a design and engineering preview before the race-ready A424 entered competition.

2023 Audi Activesphere Concept
Audi's fourth sphere concept combines the stance of a raised grand tourer with the cargo flexibility of a pickup. The fully electric Activesphere uses a long wheelbase, large wheels and height-adjustable air suspension, while its rear glass slides away to uncover a small load platform. Audi proposed augmented-reality glasses instead of a dashboard filled with physical displays. Dual electric motors and quattro all-wheel drive were part of its technical proposal; the vehicle was not a production announcement.

2023 BMW i Vision Dee Concept
BMW's i Vision Dee explored how a future compact sedan could communicate with its occupants through screens, lighting and voice interaction. Its deliberately plain three-box body reinterpreted classic BMW proportions, while an advanced E Ink demonstration divided the exterior into many individually controlled color panels. A full-width head-up display replaced a conventional instrument cluster in the proposal. The car was chiefly a digital interface study, not an announcement of range, power output or production hardware.

2023 BMW Touring Coupe Concept
BMW built the Concept Touring Coupe around a Z4-derived two-seat sports-car platform and showed it at Villa d'Este. Its most important change was the closed shooting-brake body, with a long roof running into a compact rear deck and a useful luggage area. A straight-six engine remained under the hood, preserving the roadster's traditional drivetrain layout. The one-off also used special trim and fitted luggage, but the body shape was its real experiment.

2023 BMW Vision Neue Klasse Concept
BMW unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse in Munich as a preview of its next family of purpose-built electric vehicles. Short overhangs, a low beltline and an almost upright front end give the sedan clean proportions without copying existing BMW EVs. Inside, the dashboard is simplified around a large center display and the Panoramic Vision projection along the windshield base. BMW linked the design to new battery cells, software and electric-drive architecture, without declaring a final model specification.

2023 BYD Song L Concept
BYD showed the Song L in Shanghai as a close-to-production electric coupe-SUV built around the company's e-Platform 3.0. The low nose, frameless-door look and sloping roofline aimed to give the Dynasty lineup a sportier body style. The concept established the design direction for a later production model, but the show-car appearance and equipment were not a complete retail specification. This was an early engineering and styling preview rather than an unrelated show sculpture.

2023 CALLUM SKYE Concept
Ian Callum's design firm unveiled SKYE as an unusually compact electric off-road sports vehicle. The two-door body puts a wide track, high ground clearance and substantial wheel travel ahead of a conventional SUV cabin. The concept was designed for both rough terrain and road use, with a battery-powered drivetrain and lightweight construction. Its clean roof shape and sharply cut wheel openings distinguish it from a typical dune buggy; final production specifications were not established at its 2023 debut.

2023 Caterham Project V Concept
Caterham's Project V set out to make a usable electric coupe without losing the low weight and straightforward handling of its Seven sports cars. The concept uses a lightweight body, a rear-mounted electric motor and a compact battery pack, with two main seats and a small central rear seat. The design targets roughly one metric ton rather than the mass of a typical long-range EV. Its most important idea is reducing weight and complexity, not maximizing screen size or peak horsepower.

2023 Chery Arrizo Star Concept
Chery used the Arrizo Star concept at the Shanghai motor show to test a more streamlined and upmarket sedan design. The long, low four-door body, thin LED lighting and smooth front fascia gave the Arrizo name a futuristic appearance distinct from its production family cars. Little finalized drivetrain information was released for this specific show vehicle, so the car is best understood as a design proposal. Its relevance is the direction of Chery's larger sedan styling and cabin packaging.

2023 Cupra DarkRebel Concept
Cupra unveiled the physical DarkRebel at Munich after developing its form through a digital design program. The long-nosed electric shooting brake wears a very low roof, deep side channels and a dramatic rear diffuser. Inside, driver-focused controls and motorsport-inspired seating make the coupe feel more like a track car than a practical wagon. Cupra did not publish a validated range or power figure; the concept's purpose was to push the brand's design identity beyond current road cars.
2023 Daihatsu Me:MO Concept
Daihatsu's Me:MO is a compact electric city car built around the idea of easily changing exterior and interior panels over its lifetime. Its boxy shape makes more efficient use of the small footprint than a conventional hatchback, while simple removable body elements support repairs and personalization. The prototype reflects the Japanese kei-car focus on maneuverability and usable interior space. It is not a production-ready model with confirmed battery or motor figures, but a proposal for adaptable ownership.
2023 Daihatsu OSANPO Concept
The OSANPO is Daihatsu's compact electric open-top concept, named after the Japanese word for a stroll. With a short, tall body, upright seating and minimal weather protection, it favors low-speed sightseeing over high-speed sports-car performance. The cabin and exterior are deliberately simple, offering a different type of urban mobility from a normal city hatchback. Daihatsu presented it as an experimental mini vehicle; no market-ready battery, range or performance specifications accompanied the reveal.
2023 Daihatsu UNIFORM Cargo Concept
UNIFORM Cargo rethinks the electric delivery van as a small, square, easily cleaned working tool. The concept has a flat-sided body and generous rear load opening, keeping wasted exterior space to a minimum. Its purpose is to support trades, urban deliveries and other small-business work without the size of a conventional commercial van. Daihatsu emphasized simple operation and adaptable equipment rather than speed. A specific production drivetrain or retail launch schedule was not established at the show.
2023 Daihatsu UNIFORM Truck Concept
The UNIFORM Truck uses the same practical approach as its Cargo sibling but adds an open rear bed for carrying equipment or materials. The tall cab and squared-off panels make the dimensions easy to use in tight streets and work areas. Electric propulsion suits short commercial trips, while the concept's simple flat surfaces are intended to reduce operational complexity. Daihatsu treated it as a mobility proposal and did not publish a final payload rating, battery size or sale date.
2023 Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept
Daihatsu's Vision Copen revisits its small roadster with a longer, wider body and a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Unlike many 2023 concepts, it was conceived around an internal-combustion engine that could run on carbon-neutral fuel, rather than a purely electric motor. The rounded headlights and short overhangs reference earlier Copens without simply copying them. Its dimensions move beyond Japan's kei-car rules, making it a broader interpretation of the affordable open-top sports car.
2023 Fisker Alaska Concept
Fisker previewed the Alaska as a relatively light, midsize electric pickup based on a modified version of the Ocean SUV's platform. A rear partition was designed to open up, extending the bed into the cabin to carry longer objects. The company discussed a choice of battery packs and dual-motor propulsion, but the displayed truck was a development preview rather than a certified product. Its compact footprint and flexible load arrangement distinguished it from full-size electric pickups.
2023 Fisker PEAR Concept
Fisker's PEAR concept aimed to make a small electric crossover practical and less expensive to manufacture. The project featured a tall cabin, a simple dashboard and an unusual rear hatch that would lower into the body instead of swinging outward. Fisker described reduced parts counts and a flexible passenger layout as major engineering goals. Although multiple versions were shown in 2023, no finalized production range or sales launch followed the concept in the form originally promised.
2023 Fisker Ronin Concept
The Ronin was Fisker's high-performance electric grand-touring proposal, combining a low four-door body with an opening roof. Its unusual mix of a retractable hardtop, rear passenger access and long-distance travel intent set it apart from ordinary electric supercars. Fisker announced ambitious power and range targets, but those figures remained claims for a planned vehicle, not independently demonstrated test results. The concept was unveiled during the company's 2023 product event alongside the Alaska and PEAR.
2023 GAC ERA Concept
GAC's ERA concept explored a large electric crossover with a long wheelbase and a cabin organized around passenger comfort. Rounded dashboard forms, a broad roof and smooth exterior surfaces gave it a calmer appearance than a conventional SUV. The design explored intelligent onboard interfaces and flexible use of interior space while retaining a recognizable road-vehicle layout. GAC presented it as a styling and mobility study, so its powertrain details were less settled than those of a commercial production preview.
2023 GAC Van Life Concept
Shown during Milan Design Week, the GAC Van Life concept takes the idea of a small camper toward an electric, all-purpose mobile room. Its tall body, large windows and compact footprint prioritize usable floor space over a long hood or sporting stance. The cabin is arranged for travel, rest and flexible daily activities, with a clean exterior intended to fit different settings. GAC offered the design as an exploration of changing vehicle use, not a fully engineered camper on sale.
2023 Geely Galaxy Light Concept
The Galaxy Light concept previewed Geely's new electric-era design language with a wide, low four-door sedan. A smooth hood, full-width lighting and restrained side surfacing replaced the busy grilles and creases seen on some earlier Chinese sedans. Geely emphasized connected-car technology and aerodynamic efficiency as foundations for future Galaxy models. The concept previewed a production direction, but it should not be mistaken for a finalized customer vehicle with complete independently tested performance figures.
2023 Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept
Genesis revealed the GV80 Coupe concept in New York, turning its luxury SUV into a lower-roofed, sportier four-seat vehicle. The orange show car wore a wide grille, slim dual light bars, large wheels and a sloping rear roofline. Its deeply bolstered cabin and rear strut brace made the interior more performance-focused than that of a typical luxury crossover. The concept's chief purpose was to test market interest and proportions before a later production GV80 Coupe arrived.

It used the brand's dedicated e:N Architecture W direction, with a longer, wider body and strong fender forms. The smooth nose and technical lighting emphasized the change from the company's gasoline SUVs. Honda paired the design with plans for updated driver-assistance and connected features. It was a third-wave technology preview rather than a badge-engineered version of the e:NP2 prototypes.
2023 Honda e:NP2 Concept
Honda revealed the e:NP2 prototype in Shanghai as a new electric crossover for its Chinese joint-venture lineup. Its sharply sloped rear glass and fastback roof give the tall vehicle a distinct outline. The prototype shared basic development direction with the e:NS2, but carried its own front-end treatment and badging for a different dealer network. Honda kept final market details separate from the prototype debut; the car chiefly demonstrated its next-generation China-focused electric design.
2023 Honda e:NS2 Concept
The e:NS2 prototype was presented beside the e:NP2 but used different lamps, front trim and surface detailing. Both explored a new body style between a sedan and an SUV, with a higher ride height and a dramatically sloping roof. The car was intended for Honda's Chinese-market electric range rather than its global gasoline lineup. Honda had not announced final retail performance or range data for the prototype at the Shanghai reveal.
2023 Honda Prelude Concept
The Prelude concept reintroduced Honda's familiar coupe name at the Japan Mobility Show with a sleek two-door body and short rear deck. Honda described it as an electrified sports model designed to preserve driving enjoyment, rather than as a traditional high-output supercar. The production direction later centered on hybrid technology, despite early assumptions that the show car was fully electric. Its clean proportions and simple cockpit were the main story; 2023 specifications were not finalized.
2023 Honda Sustaina-C Concept
Honda's Sustaina-C is a small electric hatchback built around recycling and material reuse. Its smooth, rounded body incorporates resin panels intended to be more easily reused or recycled, reducing reliance on newly manufactured materials. The concept was paired with a small electric Pocket mobility device using similar design thinking. Honda showed neither as a fully specified production car. The unusual engineering focus was on the entire life cycle of body panels, not just tailpipe emissions.
2023 Hyundai Mobis M.Vision HI Concept
M.Vision HI was Hyundai Mobis' 2023 purpose-built electric mobility concept organized around rest and leisure rather than ordinary commuting. The almost symmetrical pod-like body creates a flexible interior with seats that can rotate or change function. Screen-based entertainment and autonomous operation were central to the idea. The concept demonstrates how an electric platform might become a shared lounge or mobile room; it was not a certified consumer vehicle with published range and power figures.
2023 Hyundai Mobis M.Vision TO Concept
Hyundai Mobis showed the M.Vision TO at CES with a narrow, modular electric body and independently controlled corner modules. The e-Corner approach combines wheel propulsion, steering and braking so the vehicle can theoretically crab sideways or turn in very tight spaces. Its tall cabin was designed for autonomous services and urban passenger transport, with lights communicating intentions to other road users. The prototype illustrates future component integration rather than a conventional vehicle ready for sale.
2023 Infiniti QX Monograph Concept
Infiniti unveiled the QX Monograph at Pebble Beach to show how its next large luxury SUV could look. A square, upright body, full-width light elements and a reworked double-arch grille gave the concept a more imposing stance without losing the brand's curved surfaces. It was a near-production styling study, not a promise of a new propulsion system. The model later informed the redesigned QX80, especially its front end, shoulders and lighting treatment.
2023 Infiniti Vision Qe Concept
The Vision Qe was Infiniti's first full electric-sedan design study, with a long, low silhouette and a smooth, almost uninterrupted roof. Its illuminated front pattern was intended to retain a recognizable Infiniti face without a traditional cooling grille. The cabin concept focused on an open layout and digital functions, while the exterior prioritized flowing surfaces and aerodynamic cleanliness. Infiniti presented no production-ready motor, battery or range figures, leaving this firmly in concept-car territory.
2023 Italdesign Climb-E Concept
Italdesign's Climb-E concept separates the passenger cabin from the self-driving electric platform carrying it. The idea is for the four-seat module to move between a road-going chassis and a building's vertical transport system, extending travel directly to an office or apartment. Schindler and Politecnico di Torino contributed to the broader system proposal. The vehicle challenges how a car interfaces with buildings, not how fast it can accelerate; it remained a design study.
2023 Karma Kaveya Concept
Karma introduced the Kaveya as a low electric grand-tourer intended to signal a much more ambitious product direction. A long nose, deeply recessed headlights, wide rear body and butterfly-style doors gave it proportions closer to a supercar than the company's earlier sedans. Karma discussed a dual-motor version with output approaching 1,000 horsepower, but these were projected targets for a proposed vehicle. The 2023 show car established a design identity rather than proving the final drivetrain.
2023 Kia EV3 Concept
Kia's EV3 concept reduced the boxy proportions of the earlier EV9 to a smaller electric crossover. Vertical lighting, strong squared fenders and a broad cabin were meant to provide SUV practicality without a bulky body. The interior explored reusable materials and a less cluttered layout, including furniture-like seating details. It previewed the production EV3's overall design direction, but the concept did not include complete retail powertrain and range details at its 2023 debut.
2023 Kia EV4 Concept
The EV4 concept combined a low four-door profile with sharp folds, vertical front lighting and a short rear deck. Suzuki's eWX is a small electric microvan concept with an upright body that makes the most of limited road space. Its narrow width, flat roof and sliding-door-style packaging were designed for daily errands and short family trips. Color accents and friendly lights give the otherwise boxy vehicle a playful character. Suzuki cited a proposed driving range of around 230 kilometers, but this was a concept target rather than an independent real-world test result.
2023 Suzuki Spacia Concept
Suzuki used the Spacia concept to preview the next version of its tall kei-class family car. The concept kept a compact footprint, tall roof and sliding doors to maximize passenger room and improve access in Japanese parking spaces. New lamps, body detailing and interior storage solutions were the principal changes. Although the show vehicle was near production, Suzuki presented it as a concept, so technical details should not be confused with final customer specification for every trim.
2023 Suzuki Spacia Custom Concept
The Spacia Custom concept was the more assertively styled companion to Suzuki's regular Spacia preview. It used a larger-looking front fascia, darker trim, distinctive lighting and more upmarket interior details, while retaining the high-roof kei-wagon proportions. The shared packaging means wide-opening side doors and efficient use of interior height remained central. This was an advance look at a conventional small-car product rather than a speculative autonomous or high-performance vehicle.
2023 Suzuki Swift Concept
Suzuki displayed a Swift concept at the Japan Mobility Show with a compact five-door hatchback body and updated lighting. The familiar upright roof and rounded side glass were retained, but reshaped front and rear panels gave the car a more modern appearance. Toyota Auto Body displayed a battery-electric HiAce concept with a strongly rectangular van body and large loading apertures. The dedicated electric packaging increases flexibility for cargo, courier work and accessible transport without needing the bulky engine compartment of a conventional van. The emphasis was on ease of entry, freight access and urban maneuverability, not visual drama. It was a work-vehicle prototype, with final charging, payload and market information still separate from any production decision.
2023 Toyota IMV 0 Concept
Toyota developed the IMV 0 as an inexpensive modular work vehicle that customers could configure for different tasks. The basic cab and rear chassis support cargo beds, retail equipment or other locally fitted bodies, rather than forcing buyers into one standard pickup layout. Its straightforward combustion drivetrain and bolt-on accessories were chosen for practicality in emerging markets. Although Toyota treated it as a concept in Tokyo, the idea was close to a commercial product and later underpinned utility models.
2023 Toyota Kayoibako Concept
The Kayoibako concept is a compact electric transport box designed to work as a delivery van, passenger shuttle or small business vehicle. Its flat floor, upright sides and unusually low loading height create a usable interior on a short chassis. Toyota demonstrated the possibility of changing interior modules rather than building a different body for every job. This is an exercise in adaptable packaging and future logistics, with no published production battery or payload certification in 2023.
2023 Toyota Land Cruiser Se Concept
The Land Cruiser Se imagines a large three-row Land Cruiser with battery-electric drive and a unibody structure. Its longer, lower body and narrow lamps look very different from the traditional ladder-frame SUV, but the concept retained generous ground clearance and a strong shoulder line. Toyota said the electric drivetrain could provide quiet travel and high torque. It was a statement about possible future Land Cruiser directions, not a replacement for the existing off-road production models.
2023 Toyota Urban SUV Concept
Toyota showed the Urban SUV concept in Europe as a preview of a compact electric crossover. It uses a relatively short, wide body with a raised driving position, broad shoulders and a practical five-door cabin. Toyota discussed both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive possibilities for the intended production family. The study's main focus was making dedicated electric-SUV packaging accessible below the size of the bZ4X, rather than showcasing a radical autonomous interface.
2023 Toyota Auto Body X-Van Gear Concept
The X-Van Gear is a boxy van proposal shown in Tokyo by Toyota Auto Body. It uses a large glass area and broad door openings to create a vehicle that can switch between family travel, recreation and work. Tall sides and a flat roof maximize interior volume, while a clean exterior avoids the heavy styling of many SUVs. It is a packaging-focused concept with no fully defined commercial powertrain, and should not be confused with a production Toyota HiAce derivative.
2023 Volkswagen California Concept
The California concept previewed a new generation of Volkswagen's compact camping van, using the long-wheelbase Multivan as its base. Its most notable change was adding sliding side doors on both sides, improving access and campsite flexibility. A pop-up roof, modular kitchen and reconfigured cabin furniture made the interior more practical for overnight use. The study retained plug-in-hybrid development direction and was a near-production camper preview rather than a completely new electric platform.
2023 Volkswagen ID.2all Concept
Volkswagen's ID.2all concept previewed an affordable electric hatchback below the ID.3. Its compact body, near-upright rear, clean headlights and strong rear pillar gave the concept familiar small-car proportions. The design used a front-drive version of Volkswagen's MEB architecture, rather than simply shrinking the larger rear-drive EVs. Volkswagen discussed a target price near 25,000 euros, but cost, range and performance remained goals for the eventual production car.
2023 Volkswagen ID.GTI Concept
Volkswagen applied its GTI design identity to the ID.2all electric hatchback concept. Red grille trim, tartan-inspired upholstery, sport seats and a larger rear spoiler connect the car to decades of gasoline GTIs. Electric front-wheel drive and electronically controlled dynamics were proposed to give it quick response without needing a traditional gearbox. It was a preview of a possible small electric hot hatch, not an announced finished specification for power, weight or price.

2023 Volkswagen ID.X Performance Concept
The ID.X Performance was Volkswagen's experimental performance version of the ID.7 electric sedan. Wider track, deep aerodynamic add-ons and a large rear wing made its body look far more aggressive than the production car. The powertrain combined two electric motors for all-wheel drive and a manufacturer-quoted output above 400 kilowatts. VW used the vehicle to test the design potential of its MEB hardware; it was not sold as a retail ID.7 variant.

Jeep's brightly colored Wrangler Rubicon 4xe project combined the factory plug-in-hybrid powertrain with parts selected for serious off-road use. A height-adjustable air suspension, 37-inch tires, protective bumpers and a winch gave it much more clearance than a standard road-biased SUV. The pink paint and black exterior details were deliberately unconventional for the segment. Although it shared much of its hardware with existing products, Jeep presented it as a one-off Safari concept.
2023 Lamborghini Autentica Concept
The Autentica was a one-off open-top Lamborghini made around the Aventador's carbon-fiber platform and naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12. Its body adopted sharp, wedge-like panels, large cooling openings and prominent aerodynamic elements, but left the passenger compartment open to the sky. It was created beside the Invencible coupe as a final design exercise for Lamborghini's non-hybrid V12 architecture. The vehicle was customer-commissioned rather than developed as a future series-production concept.
2023 Lamborghini Invencible Concept
Lamborghini built the Invencible coupe as a unique carbon-bodied farewell to the Aventador's V12 mechanical package. It retained the 6.5-liter naturally aspirated engine and the underlying all-wheel-drive platform, but featured a new roof, angular nose and prominent rear aerodynamic treatment. The dramatic design borrowed ideas from motorsport and earlier Lamborghini show cars. Unlike the 2023 Lanzador concept, the Invencible was a one-off completed vehicle, not a proposal for future electrified production.

The Z Safari Rally Tribute reinterpreted the historic Datsun 240Z Safari rally cars using a modern Nissan Z sports coupe. It received increased ride height, rugged tires, rally lighting and graphics based on the classic competition look. Unlike a conventional lowered track-day Z, the show car was configured for loose surfaces and poor roads. The project was built with Tommy Pike Customs for the 2023 SEMA show, and remained a commemorative one-off.
2023 Opel Rocks-e Xtreme Concept
Opel built the Rocks-e Xtreme after a design competition invited a more radical version of its tiny urban electric quadricycle. The finished 2023 show car added a pronounced roof wing, wider arches, exposed protective bars and large off-road wheels. Those changes made the lightweight commuter look like a miniature rally-raid vehicle, although its electrical and legal category came from the ordinary Rocks-e. The Xtreme was an expressive design exercise rather than a customer-ready off-road model.
2023 Subaru Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept
The Crosstrek Boost Gear concept was Subaru's Tokyo Auto Salon 2023 take on a more adventure-focused compact crossover. The production-based vehicle featured extra exterior protection, all-terrain styling, upgraded carrying equipment and a more purposeful wheel-and-tire combination. Subaru kept the recognizable Crosstrek proportions and standard vehicle concept, rather than inventing a new body style. The demonstration asked how customers might adapt a familiar AWD crossover for camping and rougher weekend use.
2023 Subaru Impreza STI Parts Prototype Concept
Subaru's 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon Impreza prototype showcased STI components under development for the newly updated hatchback. The car focused on handling feel, body accessories and detailing rather than a wholly different drivetrain. Its underlying production Impreza structure was unchanged, meaning the prototype's interest lay in the fit and combination of performance-oriented parts. Subaru displayed it as an experimental accessory specification before those components had a fully settled market configuration.
2023 Subaru Levorg STI Sport Sharp Prototype Concept
The Levorg STI Sport Sharp prototype built on the Japanese wagon's already sporting specification. STI used revisions to chassis tuning, appearance and equipment to explore a more focused road-driving package while retaining the practical five-door body. The vehicle was displayed at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon and was positioned close to limited-production development. It is therefore best understood as an advanced trim prototype, not an entirely independent concept wagon engineered from the ground up.
2023 Subaru Rex Boost Gear Concept
Subaru applied the Boost Gear theme to its compact Rex crossover at Tokyo Auto Salon 2023. Special body fittings, protective details and outdoor-focused equipment made the small car appear more capable on unpaved roads, even though it retained the production Rex's basic mechanical layout. It was paired with the larger Crosstrek Boost Gear concept to explore a common accessory direction across two vehicle sizes. Neither show car represented a fully new platform.

2023 Toyota Blue Beetle Tacoma Concept
Toyota prepared the Blue Beetle Tacoma for its 2023 SEMA display in collaboration with promotional partners around the Blue Beetle film. It retained the newer Tacoma pickup's basic mechanical package but gained a coordinated exterior wrap and off-road equipment. Toyota used the truck to illustrate how dealer and performance accessories could support personal expression without changing the core model. This was a promotional one-off build rather than a standalone off-road Tacoma concept intended for showrooms.
2023 Toyota FJ Bruiser Concept
Toyota's FJ Bruiser transformed a 1966 Land Cruiser FJ45 pickup into an extreme rock-crawling machine for the 2023 SEMA show. A modern V8 engine, heavy-duty drivetrain components, custom suspension and tracked rear-wheel technology replaced much of the original vehicle's mechanical character. Its narrow vintage cabin remained, but the stance and tire size were far more aggressive. The result was a factory-led restomod and technical demonstration, not a planned new Land Cruiser product.
2023 Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept
Toyota's GR H2 Racing Concept showed a possible future hydrogen-combustion endurance racer at Le Mans in June 2023. The low, wide prototype used a purpose-built racing silhouette and carried a hydrogen-engine program rather than a conventional gasoline or battery-only setup. Toyota connected the project with discussions about a hydrogen racing category and its existing combustion-engine research. It was a technical proposal for future motorsport regulations, not a homologated Le Mans competition car in 2023.
2023 Toyota Rangga Concept
Toyota showed the Rangga concept in Indonesia in 2023 as a highly adaptable commercial pickup platform. Its relatively simple cab-and-chassis arrangement could carry different bodies for deliveries, food vending and other small businesses. The modular approach put load capacity and low ownership cost ahead of elaborate styling or high performance. Toyota used it to demonstrate practical work-vehicle configurations; the show concept was a precursor to later IMV-family commercial vehicles rather than an independent lifestyle pickup.
2023 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner Concept
The 2023 Tacoma X-Runner concept imagined a return of Toyota's lowered, road-focused sport pickup. Built from the new-generation Tacoma, it received street-oriented suspension changes, aggressive tires and a more powerful V6 package derived from the Tundra family. Its stance was deliberately opposite to the tall off-road trucks usually used for manufacturer SEMA projects. Toyota used the build to assess interest in modern sport-truck performance, without announcing a production X-Runner at the unveiling.

2023 Toyota Auto Body Vellfire Spacious Lounge Concept
Toyota Auto Body reworked a 2023 Vellfire into a four-seat executive lounge for the Japan Mobility Show. Removing the usual rear seating freed roughly 500 millimeters of additional legroom, while dedicated rear chairs, a table, a refrigerator and added privacy features made the cabin closer to a mobile office. The original minivan's basic exterior and drivetrain remained. Its purpose was to investigate high-end interior packaging rather than demonstrate a new vehicle platform or motor.
Digital and adjacent mobility concepts
Digital renderings, flying-vehicle studies and other mobility designs first presented in 2023. These are grouped separately because not all are conventional four-wheel road cars.
2023 Acura Electric Vision Design Study Concept
Acura's Electric Vision Design Study appeared during Monterey Car Week in 2023 as computer-generated imagery of a low electric performance coupe. It used a pointed nose, broad shoulders and a tightly enclosed roof to communicate future design ideas. Acura did not present a finalized motor, battery or platform specification, and the renderings were not evidence of a running prototype. The work mattered as a design direction following the launch of Acura's first modern battery-electric SUV.
2023 Genesis X Gran Berlinetta Vision Gran Turismo Concept
Genesis unveiled the X Gran Berlinetta Vision Gran Turismo concept at the end of 2023 as a dramatic low sports-car design connected to the Gran Turismo game series. The long nose, flowing roof and substantial rear aerodynamics took the brand far beyond its production sedans and SUVs. Genesis discussed a conceptual high-output hybrid powertrain, but the central project was virtual performance design supported by a physical display model. No road-going customer version was confirmed.

2023 Subaru Air Mobility Concept
Subaru's Air Mobility concept was a small piloted vertical-takeoff vehicle shown at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Its unusual body used a wide central cabin and multiple electric-driven lift units to examine how Subaru's engineering might extend from road vehicles into short-range flight. Although displayed beside the Sport Mobility car, it was a flying mobility study, not a normal passenger automobile. It is included as an adjacent transportation concept rather than classified as a conventional concept car.
2023 Toyota Baby Lunar Cruiser Concept
The Baby Lunar Cruiser was a 2023 digital study from Toyota's Calty design operation imagining a compact vehicle for travel on the Moon. It adapted the Land Cruiser's upright stance and visibility-focused cabin to extreme terrain and a science-fiction environment. The design was not presented with a tested lunar powertrain or confirmed space-agency development contract. Its value was as a design exercise about navigation and passenger packaging in a place where ordinary roads do not exist.
2023 Toyota Space Mobility Concept
Toyota's 2023 Space Mobility study explored a small autonomous-capable electric vehicle for rough terrain beyond ordinary roads. Its compact body, high wheel articulation and raised passenger volume looked suited to rocky environments and potentially future space-related applications. Toyota described a highly adaptable driving system, but the vehicle was a speculative mobility exhibit rather than a production 4x4 proposal. It was shown as part of a wider set of mobility ideas at Japan Mobility Show.
2023 Yamaha Tricera Concept
Yamaha's Tricera was an electric open-cockpit three-wheeler displayed at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. The compact seating layout and steerable rear wheel were intended to give drivers a distinctive cornering experience rather than the feel of a conventional automobile. Yamaha discussed manual control over the rear steering to change the handling character. It belongs to the wider mobility-design field, but its three-wheel arrangement and Yamaha branding make it a separate category from mainstream four-wheel concept cars.
Updated concepts and advanced prototypes
Revised forms of earlier concepts and near-production engineering previews publicly shown during 2023. Their original concept ideas appeared before this year.
2023 BMW iX5 Hydrogen Pilot Fleet Concept
BMW expanded use of its iX5 Hydrogen fuel-cell SUV in 2023 through a small international pilot fleet. The vehicles combined hydrogen tanks, a fuel-cell system and an electric motor in the existing X5-based package. They demonstrated long-range refueling practicality and the compromises of fitting hydrogen hardware into a familiar premium SUV. Because the iX5 Hydrogen had been shown in concept form years earlier, the 2023 pilot vehicles are listed as a new development stage rather than an original concept debut.
2023 Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle Third Generation Concept
Honda showed a third-generation Autonomous Work Vehicle during 2023 as an electric robotic carrier for worksites. Its low, open cargo platform and sensor equipment were designed for moving goods without a full-time driver. The machine was closer to an industrial mobility robot than a private passenger car, with emphasis on navigation, payload and jobsite deployment rather than cabin comfort. It updated earlier Honda prototypes, so it is included separately from newly introduced passenger-car concepts.
2023 Nissan Max-Out Physical Study Concept
Nissan built a physical Max-Out roadster for a 2023 design exhibition after first presenting the concept digitally in 2021. The two-seat body combined a low windshield, broad illuminated front panel and a minimal interior with a future electric-sports-car stance. Nissan did not use the display to confirm a retail launch or final powertrain figures. The 2023 reveal was significant because people could inspect the design at full size, not because the idea itself began that year.
2023 Tata Curvv ICE Study Concept
Tata showed a combustion-engine interpretation of its Curvv coupe-style SUV at India's 2023 Auto Expo. The updated vehicle kept the raised driving position and tapered rear roof of the earlier electric Curvv study, but adapted the front styling and package for an internal-combustion drivetrain. It anticipated a broader model family that could share visual cues across engine types. Since the original Curvv concept appeared in 2022, the 2023 ICE version is an evolution rather than a wholly new nameplate.
2023 Tata Sierra EV Updated Study Concept
Tata returned to its revived Sierra theme at Auto Expo 2023 with an updated electric SUV design. The revised study emphasized a more production-minded five-door body, a large glass area and the upright silhouette associated with the old Sierra name. Tata had already shown a revived electric Sierra in 2020, making the 2023 vehicle a substantial redesign of an existing concept rather than a first introduction. Its intended production drivetrain was still developing at the time.
2023 Volkswagen ID.7 CES Camouflage Prototype Concept
Volkswagen displayed an illuminated, camouflage-wrapped near-production ID.7 at CES in January 2023. The four-door electric sedan was built on the MEB family and used a long wheelbase and smooth fastback outline to prioritize cabin space and range. The unusual exterior was a reveal device, not an independent styling proposal. Volkswagen later launched the ID.7 in production form, so the CES car belongs among 2023 engineering previews rather than original concept vehicles.
