The 2006 EDAG Biwak was a strange but smart rework of the Volkswagen New Beetle. Built by German engineering firm EDAG, it debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show as a compact two-door estate concept with SUV-style attitude and a deliberately worn-in look.
The idea was to make the New Beetle more useful without losing its personality. EDAG stretched the rear into a wagon-like cargo area, raised the suspension, added auxiliary lights, fitted tougher wheels, and gave it corrugated side panels. The result looked part Beetle, part VW Thing, and part small adventure van.

The Biwak’s design theme was “used look” instead of showroom shine. EDAG used crinkle-finish paint, leather-covered bumpers, denim, and thick leather inside. The point was to make scratches and wear feel intentional, not like damage. That was unusual for a 2006 concept car, when most show cars were still built around high-gloss paint and perfect surfaces.
The packaging was more practical than the styling suggested. The Biwak addressed one of the New Beetle’s weaknesses: rear-seat space. By extending the roofline and reshaping the back of the car, EDAG created more headroom and cargo flexibility. A 40:60 split rear seat helped make it usable as both a leisure car and a small utility vehicle.

Mechanically, it was still based on the New Beetle, so this was not a serious off-roader. It used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, with the concept’s value coming from body engineering, packaging, and design rather than a new drivetrain. That matters because the Biwak was not trying to be a lifted trail rig. It was a lifestyle conversion built around function, texture, and character.
The Biwak never became a production car, but it was ahead of the small crossover mood that became common later. It took a friendly compact car and gave it more room, more utility, and a tougher visual identity. It was odd, but the logic was sound.
