2001 Volvo ACC Concept

The 2001 Volvo ACC Concept, standing for Adventure Concept Car, marked Volvo's venture into the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The concept served as a precursor to the 2003 Volvo XC90, and one of the prototypes, the Adventure Concept Car, was showcased at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show. This luxury SUV aimed to gauge public reactions to new ideas and features, presenting a 4-passenger model equipped with luxurious amenities.


The Adventure Concept Car boasted a distinct exterior design, offering a preview of the forthcoming XC90 production model. Positioned as a 4-passenger luxury SUV, the ACC featured an elevated stance, hinting at its off-road capabilities. Volvo sought to challenge the perception of its products as merely safe by introducing a more masculine appearance.


Although the displayed concept was not a production-ready car, it played a crucial role in soliciting public opinions. Volvo actively collected feedback from visitors and opened a dedicated website for online opinions. The concept's production version, expected within a couple of years, was anticipated to feature a seven-seater interior instead of the four-seater arrangement in the concept.


Externally, the ACC resembled a station wagon more than a traditional SUV. Built on a large platform utilized in the V70 station wagon and S80 sedan, the concept showcased a certain masculinity in appearance without compromising the brand's commitment to safety. Volvo aimed to position the ACC as a smaller-sized SUV, catering to a broad audience, including female buyers.


The Adventure Concept Car served as a thermometer to assess market expectations and demands for a Volvo SUV. The concept's unveiling at the Detroit Motor Show allowed visitors to express their views directly to Volvo's SUV team through special computer monitors. It emphasized Volvo's commitment to creating a solid commercial base for its entry into the SUV segment.


The ACC's design language incorporated features such as a "cab forward" appearance, reminiscent of the Volvo S60, and a gentle slope forward to create a muscular impression. Volvo aimed to strike a balance by avoiding an overly aggressive design, instead opting for a masculine appearance that conveys a sense of security.


The design team drew parallels with a jet aircraft, emphasizing the high seating position for the driver, providing excellent visibility and control. The interior of the ACC featured four top-class seats and an exceptional equipment level, including a refrigerator, TV, and a world-class audio unit. The concept aimed to offer a comfortable and convenient travel experience, akin to flying first class. The Adventure Concept Car represented Volvo's strategic move into the SUV market, signaling a departure from traditional perceptions of the brand.
