The 2006 Castagna Imperial Landaulet Concept is a modern reinterpretation of classic pre-war coachbuilding, developed by Carrozzeria Castagna Milano as a tribute to its heritage from the 1930s. Drawing direct inspiration from historic landaulet designs—particularly those built for Isotta Fraschini—the concept aimed to blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary performance and technology.
At nearly 6 meters in length, the Imperial Landaulet Concept is defined by its scale and presence. The exterior design combines angular, retro-inspired surfacing with a body style that sits somewhere between a coupe and a luxury MPV. Its proportions are intentionally imposing, with a tall stance and upright front fascia featuring a large, Rolls-Royce-inspired grille and circular headlamps. The body is highly customizable, with multiple surfaces and panels designed to allow bespoke color combinations and finishes—reflecting the coachbuilt philosophy of personalization.
Mechanically, the concept is positioned as an all-terrain luxury vehicle. It features all-wheel drive and adjustable ground clearance, allowing it to adapt to different driving conditions. Power comes from a high-output “dual compression” engine rated at approximately 800 horsepower, placing it firmly in the realm of ultra-performance luxury. While detailed technical specifications were not fully disclosed, the emphasis was on combining extreme power with versatility and comfort in all environments.
One of the defining features of the Imperial Landaulet is its interpretation of the classic landaulet roof. As in historic examples, the rear portion of the roof can slide open, exposing the rear passenger compartment to the open air while keeping the front section enclosed. This design element reinforces the vehicle’s connection to early 20th-century luxury automobiles, where open-air rear seating was a symbol of prestige.
The interior is designed for accessibility and comfort, with a focus on ease of entry and passenger experience. The cabin is accessed through large, pillarless doors that open widely, while an automatic running board deploys to assist entry. The relatively tall ride height and 163 cm vehicle height further improve ergonomics, eliminating the need to step down into the cabin. Inside, the layout prioritizes space and luxury, with dedicated storage solutions including a large rear cargo compartment and a temperature-controlled central storage area between the engine bay and passenger cabin.

From a functional standpoint, the Imperial Landaulet incorporates advanced lighting and aerodynamic features. Dual xenon headlights with adjustable height settings are complemented by LED lighting elements, while carbon fiber air scoops integrated into the front and rear bumpers help manage airflow and cooling. These elements demonstrate an effort to merge traditional design themes with modern engineering solutions.
Despite its ambition, the 2006 Castagna Imperial Landaulet Concept remained a niche, experimental vehicle with no confirmed large-scale production. It was reportedly considered for limited production under the Isotta Fraschini name, though this never materialized in a meaningful way. As a result, the concept stands primarily as a design statement—one that reflects Castagna’s attempt to revive the art of Italian coachbuilding by combining historic inspiration with contemporary luxury and performance.
