The 2001 Subaru HM-01 Concept pays homage to Subaru's automotive history, drawing inspiration from the iconic Subaru 360, the company's inaugural vehicle launched in 1958. This retro-themed concept seamlessly blends vintage aesthetics with modern hybrid technology.
Under the hood, the HM-01 features a contemporary hybrid powertrain. The front wheels are driven by a robust 46-horsepower engine generating 58 Nm of torque. In contrast, the rear wheels are propelled by a 42-volt electric motor boasting 5 kW of power and an impressive torque of 144 Nm. A planetary gearbox manages the coordination between the two power sources, all meticulously controlled by an onboard computer.
The hybrid system is designed for efficiency, particularly during idling moments. When the vehicle comes to a halt, the gasoline engine intelligently shuts off, contributing to fuel conservation and minimizing emissions. The startup process is orchestrated through a belt drive connecting the starter to the engine, ensuring a smooth, silent, and imperceptible ignition.
Built on the platform of the production all-wheel-drive Pleo model, exclusively available in the Japanese market, the HM-01 maintains a compact footprint with dimensions measuring 3425x1425x1475 mm and a wheelbase of 2310 mm.
One striking design feature of the HM-01 is the distinctive curved stamping along its sides, a creative element reminiscent of the Seat Salsa concept car, which had been showcased recently. This design choice not only pays homage to Subaru's past but also integrates contemporary design trends, making the HM-01 a compelling blend of heritage and innovation.
