2001 Maserati 320S Concept by Italdesign

The Maserati 320S Concept, a collaborative project between Maserati, Sparco, and Italdesign, emerged as a single-seat concept car in 2001, marking Maserati's anticipated return to the U.S. market. The 320S served as a precursor to the Maserati 3200GT range, showcasing a clear stylistic connection.

The design of the 320S paid homage to iconic Maserati sports cars of the past, drawing inspiration from models such as the Maserati 200, 300S, 450S, and notably the Tipo 60/61 'Birdcage.' The concept featured a small windscreen limited to the area in front of the driver, along with a visible roll-over bar and aerodynamic fairing in the rear, reminiscent of classic Maserati design elements.

Powered by a 3.2-liter turbocharged V8 engine derived from the 3200 GT Coupé, the 320S delivered a robust 370 bhp at 6,250 rpm, exhibiting a distinctive and characteristically Ferrari-like sound. Notable modifications included racing brakes, revised suspension with stiffer springs and adjustable racing dampers, and new wheels fitted with Michelin slick tires.

The concept's wheelbase, measuring 2440 mm, was shorter than that of the 3200 GT Coupé, emphasizing its racing-oriented design. The body featured a 'barchetta' type solution with a small windshield, a visible roll-over bar, and a closed and faired passenger side without a seat. The exterior design aimed to preview the future Maserati Spider, featuring an open body and shorter wheelbase.

The safety features of the 320S were developed by Sparco, incorporating an arc roll-over bar, rapid petrol filler cap on both sides, an automatic fire extinguisher system meeting FIA 2001 specifications, and a battery cut-out switch. The interior, designed for racing, featured essential components, digital instrumentation, a Sparco racing steering wheel, pedals, a starter button, and racing switches.

The collaboration with Sparco, a renowned company specializing in technical and safety equipment in motorsports, ensured the inclusion of high-quality racing elements. Michelin, Maserati's official tire supplier, contributed racing slicks to enhance performance on the track.

The 320S concept, while still in the concept stage, served multiple purposes. It not only hinted at Maserati's racing ambitions with a focus on single-marque customer races but also symbolized the brand's return to the United States. The light blue and white livery of the concept paid tribute to Maserati's historic success in the U.S. racing scene.
