2000 Renault Koleos Concept

Renault unveiled the Koleos Concept, code-named Z10, at the Geneva Motor Show, marking another groundbreaking addition to its lineup of innovative concept vehicles. This concept, the third in a series following the Vel Satis and Avantime, represents Renault's foray into a new category, blending the comfort of a top-range saloon with the off-road capabilities of a 4X4.

Projected as a "new top-of-the-range leisure vehicle concept," the Koleos features a hybrid power unit, combining a two-liter 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. The variable-height suspension, with pneumatic and hydraulic springs, allows seamless transition between 4X4 and saloon modes, enhancing both dynamic response and comfort.

The Koleos boasts a distinctive design, incorporating Renault's styling features, such as the sharp face and Ford Focus-like treatment of the 'C'-pillar. Its exterior exudes power and strength, presenting an elegant and distinguished appearance. The rear doors showcase innovative concepts, with a tailgate using twin-stage parallel opening technology and a fully modular boot separated by a retractable window.

Interior space optimization is a key feature, with a windscreen extending along glazed lateral strips for enhanced light. The four seats, crafted with carbon sheets covered in hand-stitched leather, combine aesthetics and ergonomics. The carbon laminates adapt to body pressure for optimal comfort.

Technology plays a significant role in the Koleos, featuring a speech-responsive screen for controlling essential interior functions. The arch-shaped headlamps utilize fluid optics technology, derived from Megalux research, shaping the light for dipped and main-beam positions.

The hybrid power unit intelligently adapts to different driving phases, with an electric motor for clean, all-electric city driving and a turbocharged petrol engine for open-road and 4X4 modes. The Koleos concept serves as Renault's exploration into the SUV segment, reinventing the leisure vehicle with a luxurious twist.

As a genuine concept vehicle, the Koleos was designed to gauge global public reaction to the daring and luxurious 4X4. The decision to proceed with such a vehicle would be based on the feedback received during this period of research.

The Koleos Concept encapsulates Renault's vision of blending luxury with off-road capability, showcasing a potential revolution in the SUV market. Its innovative design and technological advancements position it as a symbol of Renault's commitment to pushing boundaries in automotive design.
