- 2021 Nissan GT-R50 by ItaldesignIn Concept & Rarity·January 24, 2024Revealed in 2019, the GT-R50 emerged as a commemoration of the concurrent 50th anniversaries of the Nissan GT-R and Italdesign. To mark this milestone, the renowned Italian design house crafted a remarkable concept inspired by the esteemed Japanese supercar, the R35-generation GT-R. While the initial plan envisioned the production of 50 of these extraordinary sports cars, only 18 examples came to fruition due in part to the global pandemic and the substantial base price of €990,000 ($1,077,000) as disclosed by the manufacturer. This exclusive, custom-built machine featured a lowered roofline by 54 millimetres, an enlarged power bulge on the bonnet, and sleeker, more aggressively styled LED headlamps. The rear of the car underwent a captivating redesign, showcasing the production model's signature round taillamps seemingly suspended in mid-air, alongside a dramatic plunging rear window. Beyond its aesthetic prowess, beneath the bespoke bodywork lay a host of mechanical enhancements, particularly evident in the hand-assembled 3.8-litre V-6 engine. Upgrades such as new fuel injectors, enhanced pistons, and a redesigned exhaust system, coupled with larger GT3-specification turbochargers and intercoolers, resulted in an impressive power output of 710 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. The power was efficiently channeled to the rear wheels through an upgraded six-speed dual-clutch paddle-shift gearbox, differentials, and driveshafts. The remarkable specification extended to Bilstein DampTronic adjustable dampers, bespoke 19-inch alloy wheels, and front and rear braking systems featuring six- and four-piston Brembo brake callipers, respectively. There has only been a production of 18 cars. Distinguished by its optional Liquid Silver Metallic with Nismo Red accents, the GT-R50 depicted here uniquely incorporates a hydraulic rear wing, enhancing both its aesthetics and performance. Exceeding its base model in exclusivity and allure, the GT-R50 stands as an extraordinary fusion of advanced Japanese technology and forward-thinking Italian design. In the words of Top Gear's Tom Ford, it represents "a mix of jaw-dropping looks and synapse-shattering performance... a fitting celebration of a half-century of brilliance from both companies.4071
- 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16TIn Concept & Rarity·January 24, 2024In the 1980s, Lamborghini test driver and engineer Claudio Zampolli, who had relocated to Los Angeles, partnered with music producer Giorgio Moroder to create an innovative supercar. With the aim of garnering significant media attention, Zampolli opted for a groundbreaking V-16 engine. Inspired by the engine layout of the Lamborghini Miura, Zampolli's creation featured a transversely mounted 6.0-litre V-16 with a five-speed manual gearbox. The striking bodywork was crafted by the legendary Marcelo Gandini, renowned for designing the Miura, Lamborghini Countach, Lancia Stratos, and numerous other iconic cars. Moroder, known as "The Father of Disco," initially invested in the project, but their partnership dissolved after the prototype due to delays. Named the Cizeta-Moroder V16T, only ten units were produced, with the prototype designated as chassis 001. Unveiled in 1988, this model stood out with unique design elements and was showcased at prestigious events. Moroder retained ownership, and following Jay Leno's recommendation, chassis 001 underwent a comprehensive restoration by Bruce Canepa's team. This car remains a rare and captivating supercar, distinguished by its performance, design, history, and exclusivity.3035

- 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK RoadsterIn Concept & Rarity·January 24, 2024FROM COMPETITION TO CONCOURS: PERFECTING A GEM The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster emerges as an extraordinary model, representing the open-top iteration of a homologation special pivotal in securing consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships for Mercedes-Benz in the fiercely competitive realm of motorsports. With a storied history in motorsports, Mercedes-Benz, following notable success in the German DTM series with the C-Class racecars, entered the FIA GT Championship in 1997. The series permitted the inclusion of large-displacement GT1 cars, requiring a minimum homologation of 25 units, closely mirroring the prototype racecars anticipated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Daimler-Benz met this challenge with a swift development program, establishing an ideological link between the new car and the triumphant DTM C-Class racers, despite substantial differences between the two models. The CLK GTR, entirely redesigned, featured an aluminum honeycomb frame with carbon-fiber body panels, embodying a true monocoque architecture. Its mid/rear-engine chassis accommodated an evolved six-liter M120 V-12, equipped with titanium connecting rods and tuned for increased compression to 12.0:1. Generating 592 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, the engine propelled the car from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds, reaching an impressive top speed of 205 mph. Power was transmitted through a six-speed sequential transaxle, and the chassis boasted front and rear double-wishbone suspension with pull-rod coil springs, adjustable shock absorbers, and six-piston brakes featuring substantial carbon-composite rotors. Despite its nomenclature linking it to the C-Class DTM examples, the CLK GTR shared almost no commonality with the mass-produced CLK, except for the headlights, taillights, and rear grille. In its inaugural year, the CLK GTR dominated the FIA GT Championship, triumphing in six out of 11 events and clinching both Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. The road-legal version, known as the Straßenversion, was introduced in 1997, boasting a more potent engine with increased displacement. Only 20 Straßenversion cars were manufactured, adding to their desirability among enthusiasts.3042
- 1985 Porsche 962 Le MansIn Concept & Rarity·January 24, 2024Porsche's illustrious connection with the 24 Hours of Le Mans reaches its zenith through the achievements of the Group C era, prominently featuring the groundbreaking 956 and 962 models. The introduction of the 956 represented a pivotal moment for Porsche, departing from the traditional tubular chassis to embrace an aluminum monocoque. Accompanied by a twin-turbocharged 2.65-liter six-cylinder engine, the 956 harnessed ground-effect aerodynamics, generating substantial downforce. Noteworthy was its adaptability, featuring a distinctive long-tail configuration tailored for the demands of Le Mans, and a short-tail "Sprint" setup for regular circuits. This design versatility proved instrumental in the vehicle's success, contributing to five consecutive World Sportscar Championships, an unparalleled achievement. Chassis 004, a distinguished Works 962, entered the Le Mans stage in 1985, adorned in the iconic Rothmans livery. Piloted by John Watson, Vern Schuppan, and Al Holbert, it showcased exceptional performance, sustaining second place for over 12 hours until a crankshaft failure halted its progress after 21 hours. Undeterred, chassis 004 transitioned into the 1985 World Sportscar Championship, making notable appearances at Hockenheim, Mosport, and Spa-Francorchamps. In the following 1986 season, chassis 004 underwent evolution to the 962, adapting to IMSA regulations. Notably, its long-wheelbase setup allowed pedals to move behind the front axle center line, enhancing mechanical efficiency. The 962 maintained structural similarities with its 956 predecessor, solidifying its competitive edge. The 1986 24 Hours of Le Mans saw chassis 004, now sporting the number "No. 2," led by drivers Jochen Mass, Bob Wollek, and Vern Schuppan. The vehicle's acutely honed aerodynamics, especially in its long-tail configuration, played a crucial role as the trio contended for the lead. Despite encountering an oil spill at 3:04 am, leading to a mistimed departure from the track and subsequent retirement, the vehicle showcased its technical prowess. Acquired by Joest Racing in April 1987, chassis 004 continued to shine. The twin-turbocharged 2.65-liter six-cylinder engine, a hallmark of Porsche's endurance racing success, remained a force on the racing scene. With Joest Racing, the vehicle secured a notable 2nd-place finish at the 1987 1000 Kilometres of Nürburgring, exemplifying its enduring competitiveness. The pinnacle of chassis 004's Le Mans journey occurred in 1988, draped in Blaupunkt colors. With drivers David Hobbs, Didier Theys, and Franz Konrad, it navigated the race flawlessly, finishing 5th overall, surpassing the second factory Shell Dunlop 962. Beyond its racing achievements, chassis 004 became a focal point at major events, chosen by Valentino Rossi at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed and showcased at Goodwood and the Silverstone Classic in 2022 alongside legends Derek Bell and John Watson. A meticulous restoration in 2018 by marque expert Trevor Crisp attests to the vehicle's enduring legacy, combining technical innovation, aerodynamic precision, and a storied racing history.3047

- Colours of Speed – Porsche 917In Automotive Books·December 7, 2023The year, 2019, was a very important milestone in Porsche’s motorsport heritage, as it represented the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Porsche’s all-conquering 917 race car. The Porsche Museum was, as expected, honoring the 50th anniversary of this racing icon as part of a comprehensive special exhibition entitled “50 Years of the Porsche 917 - Colours of Speed.” A total of 14 exhibits - including ten 917 models and the 908 LH (that almost snatched the 1969 Le Mans 24 Hours from Ford). The Porsche 917 made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969. When the FIA raised the engine capacity limit for the sports car championship to five liters in 1968, Porsche saw their chance: within a year, constructor Hans Mezger created the car. The 917 already achieved the goal of overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971 and later drove up to 1100 turbo horsepower in the Can-Am series. An interesting commemorative book has been published by the Porsche Museum under the same name as the exhibition. With this highly advisable title, the Company Archive presents the background to the origins, technology, drivers, races, and successes of the Porsche 917, focusing on the rainy race won by Hans Hermann and Richard Atwood 50 years ago. - 2023 Porsche Mission XIn Concept & RarityJanuary 16, 2024Porsche introduces the Mission X, a groundbreaking concept hypercar that signifies the realization of yet another dream. Set to make its debut on June 8, 2023, the Mission X pays homage to Porsche's 75-year sports car legacy, coinciding with the special exhibition '75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars' at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Inspired by iconic sports cars like the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder, the Mission X serves as a technology beacon for the future of sports cars, providing critical impetus for evolutionary development. With Le Mans-style doors, a high-performance electric powertrain, and a compact design reminiscent of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, the Mission X is a relatively compact hypercar measuring approximately 4.5 meters in length and two meters wide. The aerodynamically designed concept car features mixed-size tires, 20-inch wheels at the front, and 21-inch wheels at the rear for optimal performance. The exterior, finished in Rocket Metallic, showcases sculpted bodywork and muscular lines, challenging the notion that hypercars must look aggressive. The Mission X's low-slung body, less than 1.2 meters tall, is complemented by a lightweight glass dome with an exoskeleton made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, extending over both occupants. The distinctive light signature, reinterpreting the characteristic Porsche four-point graphic, adds a captivating visual element. Inside, the Mission X emphasizes driver focus with an asymmetrical interior and unique color schemes. The two seats, with leather pads in Andalusia Brown, feature a combination of Kalahari Grey for the driver's seat and contrasting Andalusia Brown for the passenger seat. Motorsport parallels, including an open-top steering wheel with mode switches and shift paddles, highlight the Mission X's commitment to performance. Technologically, the Mission X aims for exceptional power-to-weight ratio, increased downforce, and rapid charging performance. The central installation of the battery, following the 'e-core layout,' provides excellent agility, similar to conventionally powered mid-engined cars. Drawing inspiration from historical super sports cars, including the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder, the Mission X aspires to set new benchmarks in series production. The mission is clear: if the Mission X goes into series production, it aims to be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, continuing Porsche's legacy of pushing the boundaries of e-performance and sustainability.00
