1968 Shelby Lonestar Prototype

The Shelby Lonestar Prototype, developed in 1968, was created in secret as a potential successor to the legendary Shelby Cobra, utilizing Ford GT40 underpinnings. Built in England and referred to internally as the Shelby III, the prototype featured a mid-mounted Ford 289 cubic inch V8 engine, delivering a blend of American muscle and advanced mid-engine design. It also incorporated targa-style removable roof panels, adding a unique touch to its sleek and aggressive styling. However, due to evolving safety regulations, the Lonestar was deemed unviable for sale in the U.S., leading to the project's cancellation. The lone prototype remained a forgotten piece of Shelby history until it was restored and showcased at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2018, giving enthusiasts a rare glimpse at what could have been.
