7 Forgotten Yamaha Concept Cars

Yamaha is one of the biggest names in motorcycles, but its history with four wheels runs much deeper than most people realize. Long before the company showed futuristic concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show, Yamaha had already designed its own sports cars, engineered engines for other automakers and experimented with everything from lightweight city cars to a Formula 1-powered supercar. Some were created entirely in-house, others were developed with major Japanese automakers, and several came surprisingly close to production. These are seven of the most important cars and prototypes from Yamaha’s long, strange attempt to break into the automobile business.

1960 Yamaha YX-30
Yamaha’s first serious attempt at building a car began in 1959, when the company established the Yasukawa Research Lab specifically to study high-performance automobiles. Engineers used the MGA Twin-Cam as an early benchmark because its 1.6-liter DOHC engine represented unusually advanced technology at the time, but Yamaha ultimately designed its own 1.6-liter liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four, along with a welded box-section steel space frame and lightweight hand-laid FRP body. Suspension components were borrowed where practical from existing Japanese and foreign cars to speed development, while much of the rest of the vehicle was engineered from scratch.
The completed two-seat YX-30 prototype was running by the end of 1960 and soon entered durability testing, during which Yamaha recorded a verified 144 km/h (approximately 89 mph). That number may sound modest today, but the YX-30 was primarily an engineering exercise created by a motorcycle manufacturer that had barely five years of experience as an independent company. Yamaha never published definitive horsepower, torque, vehicle weight, acceleration, or full dimensional specifications for the car, but the project established the engineering base that would influence nearly every Yamaha automobile effort that followed.

1961 Yamaha YX-30 II
Only six months after the first prototype, Yamaha completed a second YX-30 on June 5, 1961, commonly referred to today as the YX-30 II. Instead of the first car’s open two-seat body, the second prototype received a fixed-roof 2+2 coupe body, making it a much more realistic road-car proposal while retaining the original YX-30’s mechanical package. Yamaha’s own archive confirms that its 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four, suspension and drivetrain were unchanged from the first prototype.
The coupe demonstrated that Yamaha was already thinking beyond simply proving it could engineer a functioning sports car and toward what an actual Yamaha passenger vehicle might look like. Development continued through durability testing, but worsening business conditions eventually forced Yamaha to shut down its dedicated automotive research operation in 1962. Yamaha does not publish separate horsepower, torque, weight, acceleration or dimensional figures for the second car, and officially describes it simply as the second YX-30 prototype, 2+2 coupe version, rather than using YX-30 II as a formal factory model designation.

1964 Yamaha/Nissan A550X Prototype
Yamaha’s first internal car program may have ended, but its automotive work did not. After Yamaha demonstrated its engineering capabilities to another Japanese automaker, the companies entered a development partnership that eventually produced a complete sports-car prototype widely identified in outside historical research as the A550X and associated with Nissan. Yamaha’s own history does not name Nissan or use the A550X designation, but confirms that the partner automaker established the basic vehicle layout while Yamaha handled detailed engineering and prototype construction.
The car used Yamaha’s YX-80 2.0-liter DOHC engine, an existing sports-car chassis modified with suspension specifically redesigned for high-speed driving, and bodywork styled by a European designer working for the partner company. Its design also incorporated retractable headlights, which Yamaha describes as a first for a Japanese automobile prototype, and the finished car was completed just ten months after detailed engineering began. It was scheduled to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show as the partner automaker’s first full-scale sports car, but the project was abruptly shelved, and the Yamaha partnership ended less than two years later; verified horsepower, torque, dimensions, weight and performance figures have never been published by Yamaha.

1992 Yamaha OX99-11
Three decades later, Yamaha returned with something far more extreme. The OX99-11 was effectively Yamaha’s Formula 1 experience turned into a road car, built around a 3,498cc liquid-cooled DOHC V12 with five valves per cylinder, giving it a remarkable 60 valves in total. The road-going engine was a detuned relative of Yamaha’s contemporary F1 powerplant and is widely reported to have produced approximately 400 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
Its construction was just as unusual: a carbon-fiber structure, aluminum bodywork and fighter-jet-like canopy surrounded a centrally positioned driver with the passenger seated directly behind in tandem, much like a motorcycle. Yamaha’s museum lists the OX99-11 at 4,400 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, 1,220 mm tall, and just 1,000 kg, although some later sources quote approximately 1,150 kg for development versions; contemporary claims put 0–62 mph at roughly 3.2 seconds and a theoretical top speed of approximately 217–219 mph. Production was planned for 1994, but the global economic downturn destroyed the market for an ultra-expensive Japanese supercar, and Yamaha canceled the program after only a handful of prototypes had been built.

2013 Yamaha MOTIV
Yamaha returned to four-wheel development at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show with the MOTIV, a radically different proposition from the OX99-11. Developed around Gordon Murray Design’s iStream architecture, the tiny two-seat city car used a lightweight tubular structure bonded to composite panels, independent suspension at all four corners and a rear-engine/rear-drive layout designed to give a small commuter car some of the responsiveness Yamaha associated with motorcycles. Yamaha also designed the platform around multiple possible powertrains, including electric and gasoline configurations, rather than committing the architecture to a single propulsion system.
The electric display vehicle weighed only 730 kg and measured 2,690 mm long, 1,470 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall, making it dramatically smaller and lighter than most conventional automobiles. Period reporting on the EV version described an 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, an electric motor rated at approximately 15 kW continuous and 25 kW peak, around 99 miles of projected range, a 65 mph top speed and roughly 15 seconds from 0–100 km/h, although Yamaha’s own Tokyo Motor Show specification sheet confirms only the dimensions, 730-kg EV weight, two-seat capacity and adaptable EV/gasoline powertrain architecture.

2015 Yamaha Sports Ride Concept
Two years after the MOTIV, Yamaha showed what the same lightweight philosophy could look like when applied to an actual sports car. The Sports Ride Concept was a compact two-seat, rear-wheel-drive coupe developed around Gordon Murray Design’s iStream process, which bonded composite panels to a tubular frame to create a lightweight, rigid structure rooted in Formula 1 manufacturing ideas. Yamaha described the goal as translating the direct relationship between rider and motorcycle into a car, complete with exposed structural elements, motorcycle-inspired detailing and transparent sections in the roof, doors and floor.
At only 3,900 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,170 mm tall, the Sports Ride was extremely compact, and its reported 750-kg weight would have made it lighter than nearly every conventional production sports car of the period. Yamaha never officially released an engine displacement, horsepower, torque, transmission, acceleration figure or top speed, despite numerous later reports suggesting specific gasoline engines. What Yamaha did confirm was that the iStream platform could support gasoline, electric and hybrid powertrains and that development toward eventual automobile commercialization was actively underway at the time—making the Sports Ride far more serious than a pure styling exercise.

2017 Yamaha Cross Hub Concept
Yamaha’s final major conventional automobile concept took an entirely different direction. Unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, the Cross Hub Concept was a compact lifestyle pickup designed around Yamaha owners who might want to carry motorcycles, outdoor equipment and passengers in the same vehicle. Its defining feature was a strange but clever diamond-shaped four-seat arrangement, with the driver positioned forward and near the center while three passengers sat around and behind, creating enough usable cargo-bed length to carry up to two motorcycles without requiring the footprint of a full-size truck.
The Cross Hub measured 4,490 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,750 mm tall, while materials such as wood-inspired trim referenced Yamaha’s marine products as much as its motorcycles. Unlike the Sports Ride, Yamaha provided virtually no mechanical specifications: vehicle weight, engine or motor type, displacement, maximum output, maximum torque, and fuel capacity were all officially listed as N/A, and no credible acceleration or top-speed figure was released. That makes the Cross Hub primarily a packaging and design study, but also perhaps the clearest example of what a production Yamaha automobile could have looked like if the company had decided to build a vehicle around its entire powersports ecosystem.
Yamaha Came Closer to Building Cars Than Most People Realize
Yamaha never became a passenger-car manufacturer, but calling these projects simple design exercises undersells how serious several of them were. The company built functioning sports cars in the early 1960s, engineered prototypes for major Japanese automakers, supplied crucial expertise to the Toyota 2000GT program, entered Formula 1 and then attempted to transform that experience into the OX99-11 supercar. Decades later, the MOTIV and Sports Ride programs again reached the point where Yamaha publicly discussed development toward commercialization.
The result is one of the strangest alternate histories in the automotive industry. Somewhere between the 89-mph YX-30, the mysterious A550X, the 217-mph-class OX99-11, the featherweight Sports Ride and a pickup designed specifically to carry Yamaha motorcycles, the company repeatedly proved it had the engineering ability to build cars—it simply never committed to becoming a car company.
