The 2006 Ford 4-Trac was a rugged pickup concept unveiled at the Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok. It was not a Detroit show fantasy. Ford chose Thailand because the country was one of the world’s most important pickup markets outside the U.S. and a regional production hub for Ford one-ton trucks.
The 4-Trac was a four-door crew-cab pickup with a rescue-truck theme. It had glossy red paint, rugged aluminum panels, a large vertical front end, Ford’s three-bar grille, integrated tow hooks, winches, roof-mounted rescue lights, and 17-inch turbine-style alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. The lighting package was especially detailed, with LEDs used in the signal lights, headlamps, taillamps, and side mirrors.
The concept was built around practical off-road use, not just styling. Ford described it with a capable 4WD system and Dynamic Stability Control, positioning it as a truck for work, family use, and outdoor activity. It seated five people and used four large doors for easier cabin access.
The rear cargo system was the smartest part. The 4-Trac had a power-assisted “tailgate within a tailgate” with inner and outer sections that could work together or separately. The outer section folded down to the ground as a ramp, while the inner aluminum panel folded 90 degrees for easier loading. It could also fold flat to carry longer cargo.
The bed also included six portable containers inspired by offshore rescue boats, giving the truck organized storage for tools or recovery gear. A rear hatch connected the cargo area directly to the cabin, making the 4-Trac more flexible than a normal pickup.
The 4-Trac mattered because it pointed toward Ford’s next global Ranger design direction. Later coverage noted that the concept was a strong preview of the overseas T6 Ranger styling language, even if it was not a direct production vehicle.
