2001 Volkswagen Microbus Concept

The 2001 Volkswagen Microbus Concept was crafted by Volkswagen's California design studio, specifically with the US market in mind. This concept paid homage to the legendary Volkswagen Transporter, affectionately known as the Microbus, which achieved iconic status globally, particularly in the USA, since the 1950s.

One of the standout features of the Microbus Concept is its distinctive design. The front-end boasts narrow gas-discharge xenon headlights, creating a striking appearance. The rear design is modern, featuring a continuous surface of side windows, and the convenience of large sliding doors that operate electronically, adding to its dynamic appeal.

Inside, the Microbus offers three rows of seats. Notably, the middle seats have the ability to rotate 180 degrees, enhancing flexibility in the cabin. The third row is designed as a seat bench, and all passengers benefit from integrated seat belts. The interior showcases innovative features, including the capability to transform into a mobile cinema with multiple screens, providing an engaging and entertaining travel experience.

Connectivity and safety are paramount in the Microbus Concept. It incorporates a range of screens, including a 7-inch screen in the center console and monitors in the backrests, offering a cinematic experience for passengers. Additionally, a second 7-inch screen on the front headliner provides a view of the rear using a "Backeye" camera, contributing to an enhanced level of safety by providing a comprehensive view of the surroundings.

Technologically, the Microbus Concept does not rely on any existing Volkswagen vehicle platform. It introduces a compact 3.2-liter V6 engine with 320 Nm of torque, showcasing a commitment to cutting-edge automotive engineering.

Designed by Volkswagen's California design studio, the Microbus Concept reflects the influence of Californian automotive design, capturing the innovative and forward-thinking spirit of the region. The concept had its European premiere at the 71st International Geneva Motor Show, solidifying its status as a modern expression of personality and freedom, redefining the cult status established by the original Microbus in a contemporary context.
