The 2006 Citroën C-Buggy was a two-seat concept built around one simple idea: make a small car feel more exposed, physical, and fun. It debuted at the 2006 Madrid Motor Show as a rougher, open-air follow-up to Citroën’s C-Airplay concept. Where the C-Airplay was more of a compact urban leisure car, the C-Buggy pushed the same idea toward sand, trails, and weekend use.

The design was intentionally stripped back. There was no roof, no windscreen, no side glass, and no conventional doors. Instead, the C-Buggy used large side openings and transparent lower body sections so the driver and passenger could see the road and terrain moving underneath them. Citroën was not trying to make the car feel sealed off from the outside world. It was trying to make speed and surface feel more immediate.

Mechanically, the C-Buggy was more serious than its toy-like shape suggested. Some summaries incorrectly connect it to Citroën’s 173 hp HDi bi-turbo diesel shown around the same period, but the C-Buggy itself used a 1.6-liter petrol engine rated at 155 bhp at 8,000 rpm. It also had permanent four-wheel drive and a limited-slip rear differential, which gave the concept more credibility as a recreational off-road machine.

At just 850 kg unladen, the C-Buggy had a strong power-to-weight ratio for such a small concept. The short body, wheels pushed toward the corners, wide arches, raised stance, sump guard, and 17-inch wheels all helped it look like a compact buggy rather than a softened city car. It was not designed as a serious rock crawler, but it was clearly more than a visual exercise.

The exterior used untreated metal bodywork designed to age and oxidize over time, giving the car a raw, outdoor feel. The cabin contrasted that with bright acid-yellow trim, leather-covered surfaces, harnesses, grab handles, and a compact driver-focused layout. Citroën also included useful details like washable footwells, a drain plug, honeycomb mats, a compass, Bluetooth audio, and a small boot for gear.

The C-Buggy never reached production, and it was too exposed to work as a mass-market car. But as a concept, it showed Citroën doing what it has often done best: taking a small-car format and making it feel imaginative, functional, and slightly strange. It was a lightweight 4WD leisure concept with real mechanical intent, not just a beach-themed styling model.
