The 2026 Freelander Concept 97 marks a strategic reset for the Freelander nameplate, reintroducing it as a modern electrified SUV developed through the joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery. Unveiled as a concept with strong production intent, the model takes direct inspiration from the original Freelander’s 1997 debut while adapting its identity for today’s Chinese market. Notably, the vehicle carries no Land Rover badging, instead positioning Freelander as a standalone sub-brand aimed at electric and plug-in hybrid mobility.

The Concept 97 is rooted in the evolving strategy of Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR), established in 2012 with a production facility in Changshu, China. With localized Jaguar and Land Rover models seeing limited demand—fewer than 3,000 combined units sold in early 2026—the joint venture has pivoted toward developing new vehicles tailored specifically to regional preferences. Reviving the Freelander name allows CJLR to leverage existing brand equity while introducing a more accessible and electrified SUV lineup built on Chery’s underlying platforms.

Design plays a central role in defining the Freelander Concept 97’s identity. While it avoids official Land Rover branding, the SUV clearly borrows from the marque’s visual DNA, blending elements from the original Freelander with styling cues reminiscent of the modern Land Rover Defender. The exterior features squared proportions, pronounced wheel arches, and a rugged stance, complemented by a three-tone paint scheme offered in Glacier Blue and Thousand Mountain Green. Distinctive geometric motifs are repeated throughout the design, appearing in the lighting signatures, bumper elements, door handles, mirror housings, and even the tire tread pattern, creating a cohesive visual language.

Inside, the Freelander Concept 97 is configured as a three-row SUV with seating for six, prioritizing comfort and flexibility. The cabin layout includes a second row of individual seats and a rear bench, catering to family-oriented use while maintaining a premium feel. A wide horizontal display spans the base of the windshield, functioning as a digital instrument cluster, while a central touchscreen is paired with a row of physical controls for improved usability. Rear passengers benefit from an additional ceiling-mounted display, reinforcing the vehicle’s focus on in-cabin technology and entertainment.

From a technology standpoint, the concept integrates advanced hardware and software systems designed for next-generation mobility. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 processor and features Huawei’s Qiankun Intelligent Driving ADS 4.1 platform, which incorporates a new lidar sensor for enhanced driver assistance and semi-autonomous capabilities. The vehicle is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, supporting faster charging and improved efficiency, and is expected to utilize a plug-in hybrid powertrain in its production form.

Although full technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, the Freelander Concept 97 serves as a clear indicator of CJLR’s future direction. By combining familiar design elements with new electrified platforms and advanced connectivity, the concept aims to reposition the Freelander name for a new generation of buyers.
