2001 Toyota POD Concept

The 2001 Toyota POD Concept, a collaborative effort between Toyota and Sony, emerged as one of the most unconventional vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show, showcasing the theme of "personalization on demand" (POD). This concept car aimed to establish a two-way communication channel between the driver and the vehicle, introducing a novel approach to the interaction between humans and machines.

When approaching the Toyota POD from the front, observers could notice U-shaped grooves on the hood forming a smile, headlight eyes, and mirror ears. The car's exterior incorporated light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that changed color based on the driver's mood, enhancing the visual expression of emotions. The rear of the car featured a radio antenna designed to wag like a pet dog's tail, adding a playful and interactive element to the vehicle.

A distinct departure from traditional steering wheel and pedal controls, the POD Concept replaced them with a single joystick for controlling vehicle direction, acceleration, and braking. Sensors embedded in the car measured the driver's physiological parameters, including pulse and palm moisture on the control joystick. This information, coupled with monitoring the driver's driving style and behavior, allowed the POD to establish a connection with the driver.

The POD Concept could display emotions, such as greeting the owner with a glowing orange smile when approached. The car had the ability to sense the driver's mood and respond accordingly. For instance, if the driver appeared nervous, the car would play calming music and direct a stream of cool air. The concept extended its emotional expression to scenarios like a flat tire or running out of gas, where the orange smile would turn into a sad blue one. Sharp maneuvers or rough braking could trigger an angry red expression.

Beyond its emotional aspects, the POD demonstrated practical skills by adjusting suspension stiffness and shock absorber characteristics based on the owner's driving style. The car could communicate with other vehicles, requesting them to give way and expressing gratitude by wagging its tail.

In essence, the Toyota POD Concept aimed to elevate the car from being a mere tool to a dynamic partner, incorporating innovative features to detect, respond to, and even express emotions in collaboration with the driver.
