Gandini designed the Lamborghini Countach for Bertone in 1971. "Countach," in the dialect of Italy"s Piedmont, is an expression of astonishment and amazement. The car featured a V12 4.9 liter Lamborghini engine positioned longitudinally (the LP designation comes from the Italian "longitudinale posteriore"). The gearbox was mounted forward of the engine and protruded between the seats. The doors opened upwards and forwards, similar to the Alfa Romeo Carabo. The Countach was produced from 1974 to 1991, and 609 cars were produced. The clean lines of the original concept car and LP400 were short-lived, with wings and splitters added to the LP400S, LP500, and QV models.
